Leadwork Case Study: Holloway Sanatorium

During his nearly four decade long career Matthew has had opportunity to work on prestigious buildings in London and the south east. One example is a worked five year contract working at Holloway Sanitorium; this provided opportunity to work on some of the interesting and technical challenges of my career, examples of which are on this page. This work included casting, a skill rarely used in this era.

Holloway Sanatorium (Virginia Park), Virginia Water, Surrey

Now Crossland House, the main hall and tower were the centrepiece of the Holloway Sanatorium and remain at the heart of the Octagon development of Virginia Park. Named after the architect William Crossland, who was also responsible for neighbouring and similarly featured Royal Holloway College, this was inspired by the Cloth Hall at Ypres, and houses an incredibly elaborate painted entrance hall, the Grand Hall and the Dining Hall, now a swimming pool.
